    Money –
  • The Netherlands is located within the Euro Zone, so you’ll need to stuff your wallet with Euros!
  • Most major credit cards are widely accepted but always ask beforehand to make sure. And most ATM’s will accept credit cards along with bank pass cards containing the Cirrus logo.
  • Tipping isn’t usually necessary as a service charge is normally included but taxi drivers and waiters traditionally receive around 10% of a tip.
  • Business hours –

  • Shops in Amsterdam are open daily with Tuesday to Friday hours running until 6pm; there’s mid-morning opening on Mondays; late night shopping on Thursdays and noon to 6pm opening on Sundays.
  • Telephones –

  • Amsterdam has a good public telephone system – orange and grey coloured telephone booths use both coins, phone cards and credit cards.
  • For other coloured booths you’ll need to buy special phone cards that are available from post offices or most shops.
  • Visas/Passports –

  • You can enter The Netherlands as long as you have a valid passport. Its best to check with the Dutch Embassy in your own country to find out if you need a visa.
  • Emergencies –

  • For police, ambulance and fire brigade call 112.
  • The Amsterdam Tourist Assistance Service (ATAS) offer advice and assistance to tourists who have been the victims of crime on 020 625 3246
  • When’s a good time to go –

  • Obviously summer is quite busy in Amsterdam as this is the height of the tourist season. Spring time sees an explosion of colour with the blooming of flowers while, although a little bit on the cold side, winter is also a good time to visit as it’s much quieter around Amsterdam’s main attractions.
