Katten Kabinet

Amsterdam
For all animal lovers, this unique museum is for you! It's basically a 'cat museum' - the only museum in the world which solely concentrates on the cat. The cat was a holy symbol for the ancient Egyptians and still is in this museum.

This museum portrays the art and culture of the animal dating back through the centuries. All elements concerning the cat are featured through sculptures, drawings, pictures and paintings. A great selection of publications can be found on sale in the museum’s shop.

The museum is located in Herengracht (the gentlemen canal) in the heart of Amsterdam. Housed in a beautiful restored palatial home formerly a theatre and then a ballroom, the origins of the cat museum began when the cat of the owner of this beautiful building died. The owner then decided to set up a museum in the cat’s honour!

Kattenkabinet museum has been established on the impressive, traditionally upholstered beletage (form of ballroom design). Originally a ballroom dating back to 1750, now divided into 5 sections including a library, the interior of this museum has tried to keep with its original state as much as it possibly could.
