Originally a sanctuary for Catholic nuns, Begijnhof is an enclosed courtyard that dates from the 14th century with an array of beautifully built houses that overlook lush gardens. This it is one of the oldest Béguinage’s in the country and the only one in Amsterdam to be located within the Singel, Amsterdam’s innermost circular canal.
Since it is so old. It's actually still at medieval street level, which makes it up to a metre lower than the rest of the old city centre. Amsterdam’s oldest house, Het Housen Huis is located here along with the English Church (dating from the 15th century) and Begijnhof Chapel, all set within an oasis of calm.
